Sciatica is caused by inflammation around the root of the sciatic nerve, producing pain anywhere from the buttock all way down to the sole of the foot.
Sciatica can have many different causes, including:
- Trauma from lifting
- Disc Injury
- Muscular injury
- Restrictions in the joints around your low back or pelvis.

What Causes a Sciatica?

Trauma
Sciatica and back pain can often be caused by trauma, commonly in the form of heavy lifting. The force of lifting a heavy object can cause damage to the outer casing of the disc, resulting in a sudden shape change, also known as a bulging or slipped disc, a common cause of sciatic pain.

Degeneration
Degeneration or wear and tear can happen in the spine as we get older, particularly in people with manual jobs. This causes the discs in our spine to thin and dehydrate, making them more vulnerable to injuries such as sciatica from normal everyday movements, bending or lifting.

Muscle or Joint Strain
Sciatica can be caused by irritation or restriction in the joints and the base of your low back.
Another common cause is irritability of a muscle called piriformis at the side of your pelvis.
The Ayr Sciatica Program
Here at Cram Osteopaths in Ayr, we have helped 1000's of patients just like you with our 3 Step Sciatica Program
Step 1 - Remove Your Pain
Every sciatica case is different. Some patients will have sciatica or leg pain making walking very difficult, some patients will also have back pain. Your treatment will be tailored to your specific circumstances and diagnosis.
Treatment often involves:
- Soft and deep tissue techniques to address tension and/or shortening or spasm your lower back muscles.
- Mobilisation techniques to improve your quality and range of movement, to gently start to get you moving again.

Step 2- Restore Your Normal Range of Movement
When you have been struggling with a sciatica injury, it can seem hard to imagine that you will be able to move freely again without pain.
This step focuses on treatment to your pelvis, low back and postural alignment to help straighten you up and get you moving with confidence. Simple things like getting your shoes and socks off start to get easier again during this stage of our program.
Step 3 - Recovery
Whether your goal is to be able to:
- Lift your children again
- Get back to work
- Get back to the gym or sport
- Sleep through the night
Our 3rd step is vital to make sure that you have the strength in the muscles around the lower back and pelvis, to get back to doing the things you love without pain or restriction.
